Party Wall
interactive partition
prototype
November 2008
OVERVIEW
The Party Wall is an interactive wall divider prototype that allows users to regulate the gradient of light on both sides by pushing and pulling light diffusing cubes. Changes made to one side of the partition produce reciprocal effects on the other side, promoting a dialogue between the divided users. This brings to question the role of our walls as an architectural element to promote social interaction rather than to divide.
A fluorescent tube array is sandwiched between two panels with square holes routed out. Acrylic cubes with black faces are inserted into the holes. These cubes adjust the light gradient when pushed and pulled. The wall section is supported on a steel frame, and all electrical wiring is concealed within.
