OVERVIEW

The Situationist International was an art/political group that worked to revolutionize everyday life by disrupting our built environments and cultural representations. The idea of détournement (reversing the meaning of an image) was an iconoclastic strategy used in collage, film and the built environment to give new subversive relevance to everyday representations.

The Situationist theater is a physical “détournement” on the existing Culver City Movie Studios. By cutting away at the closed volume used for recording disseminated performances and opening the building to accommodate live performances, the building takes on a more relevant meaning to public participation.
