Auto Assembly Plant

Satellite Facility

Pasadena, CA

May 2007

OVERVIEW

The satellite auto assembly plant is designed for the students of the Art Center in Pasadena, CA. It is a small facility that allows student auto designers to fabricate full scale vehicles and observe the assembly process. The programmatic spaces are contained in boxes plugged into the structure on either side of the main space allowing for a large open area for viewing and producing automobiles.

The program is composed of large intersecting parts that give the impression of the building functioning as a machine. The configuration is congruent with the systematic auto assembly process occurring inside the facility. The building’s interlocked form is the result of an extensive process examining a variety of possibilities generated by the constraints of the site and building program.
